Tips for making this recipe

If youโ€™re using unsalted butter for this recipe how I did- though not necessarily you may add a little bit of salt to pie dough for taste. Freeze butter before shredding and wear gloves when shredding. To get and keep water freezing cold add ice and chill in fridge till ready to use. Be sure to follow all cooling instructions and step by step instructions as well.

Pie Crust Step by step

This is an 18 step process. It is one of the most important parts of an amazing pie. If youโ€™re like me- an absolute lover of pie crust, you know the pie crust is what we all look forward to. This recipe is for a thick, rich, and buttery pie crust. Making and working dough is a bit intimidating but this will have you making the perfect dough with no experience. Follow all 18 steps and details. Letโ€™s get into it!

  • You want to start off by freezing your sticks of butter for 15 minutes
  • Get a cup of water add some ice and let chill in fridge till time to use
  • Youโ€™re going to get a piece of parchment paper, baking sheet, or a dish that works best for you. (I use foil because I find it the most convenient)
  • Shred your butter unto your sheet and evenly spread it out (I recommend using a glove when shredding since butter can be slippery and messy. Itโ€™ll help you avoid getting hurt from shredder as well)
  • Pop it into freezer for at least 20 minutes
  • In the meantime start by mixing your flour, baking soda, and baking powder into a large bowl really well using a whisk
  • Flour your roller and surface you plan to roll out dough
  • Get your butter and place it into bowl with flour, baking powder, and baking soda
  • Use a potato masher (a metal whisk can work as well if thatโ€™s more convenient) and mash your butter evenly into dry mixture until it mixes and creates small clumps
  • Add your water and mix around with spatula. You should have a wet and sticky consistency
  • Take out of bowl and unto counter with the flour on it
  • Work dough into flour until all parts is no longer sticky
  • Split dough in half
  • Form two balls and set one aside
  • roll out one dough, adding flour if needed so it doesnโ€™t stick to roller then place it evenly in baking pan
  • Hug the dough around the sides of pan
  • Roll out the other dough thatโ€™s as set to the side and cut thick strings vertically
  • Place your doughs into freezer for at least 10-15 min before using

Pie sauce Ingredients

1 stick of butter (1/2 cup)

3/4 cup of flour

1 cup of granulated cane sugar

1 cup of water

1 and 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon powder

Pie sauce step by step

This gooey, sweet, buttery, and so simple sauce will compliment and complete your pie filling.

-Add your butter into a warm pot and let it melt

-Slowly add your flour as you whisk it into the butter

-Keep whisking it consistently

-Add your sugar little by little

-Add water into it and whisk all of it together

-Let it simmer for 5 minutes

-Cool to the side

Apples

-Peel the skin off all 3 of your apples

-Cut into thin slices

Letโ€™s put it together!

Now that you have your dough finished, your sauce ready, and your apples itโ€™s time to combine it together and let it do itโ€™s magic.

Instructions:

-Complete your dough (see pie crust steps)

-After making your sauce you want to turn off the heat and mix your apples into it. Get an even coat on all the apples and your sauce

-Take your pie crust out the freezer and put your filling into it

-Add your layer of cut dough to create a beautiful pie look

Final Touches

With your pieces of dough you want to lay out your longest ones horizontally and take the rest of each string and do one over the other vertically. You may brush an egg wash to the top before placing in oven. I donโ€™t find that it makes a difference in my recipe so it is optional. Take two of your fingers and make arrows all around your pie. Tuck any extra touch and fill spaces with extra dough if you please.

Place your pie into the oven and let it cook for 45 min or until golden brown. Let it cool for 20-30 min and enjoy your perfect apple pie. Pair with your favorite vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and enjoy!
